L2L Exhibition 4th-8th December

Throughout the past 8 weeks my workmates and I have been working to a project brief “Learn 2 Look” taking very individual approaches. Learn 2 Look, is a 6 session workshop that focuses on trend research. Starting of with creating an evidence board, we attempted to identify our own ‘trends’. At the end of the 6 sessions an exhibition will be held in the Vertical Gallery to showcase our final outcomes which are a response to our chosen trend; the final outcome will be a bag. The bag is our own interpretation, and will be influenced and designed according to the movement we want to explore or make awareness of.  Throughout these sessions we discuss the movements we’ve recognized and how current and existing they may be.

My interpretation of the project at this stage is all about small space design and Hybrid living. How beautifully designed products are often very practical, “Form follows function” allows us to understand how the form of an object is derived from the function. Initially thinking about an oranges net; when the sphere orange is placed into the oranges net the form of the net fixates around the orange changing the form, therefore changing the function. If you were to place a laptop or water bottle into the oranges net, the form would change to the shape of the object, subsequently changing the function. When starting to design, the net was a main influence. Leather was my chosen material for the bag; I started to play around with the idea that the bag could grow in size, being a bag to fit all. Scoring the leather to create repetitive lines making the leather stretch when it is pulled was very interesting and started to resemble an oranges net. The leather proved to be the perfect material for the job, it is a strong, raw material that wont fray when cut into. It durable and will last and hold a structure. Creating a bag that expands when you fill making it space efficient, fitting to all needs was my end aim.

The L2L exhibition presents work produced by final year Textiles in Practice students, who have through their textile work, discussed influences and potential trends that they consider will impact upon future design.

Forecasted trends include a focus on crafted products, open design as a social mode of enquiry, an awareness of the harmful effects we as a society are causing to the planet, a disconnect from technology so that we may reconnect with the real world, a focus on inclusive design & on human emotion and wellbeing and a re-connect with simple hybrid-living.

The L2L exhibition will take place in the Benzie ground floor gallery space and will run from the 4th-8th December 2017.
